On April 15, 2026, Serena—the only dugong currently under human care in Japan—celebrated the 39th anniversary of her arrival at Toba Aquarium. To mark this remarkable milestone, divers presented her with a special gift of her favorite seagrass during a commemorative event.
A large crowd of visitors gathered at the exhibit to offer their well-wishes. As staff shared touching stories from Serena’s long history at the aquarium, the atmosphere was filled with warmth and celebration.
When Serena first arrived, she was still a calf, measuring 147.5 cm in length and weighing 67 kg. Over nearly four decades, she has grown into a magnificent adult, now measuring 263 cm and weighing 375 kg.
Her primary keeper, who presented the gift, commented:
“We are honored to celebrate Serena’s 39th year with us. With her 40th anniversary at Toba Aquarium approaching next year, we remain committed to her health and happiness and look forward to spending many more years by her side.”
